I stayed good on my word and I made those Perfectly Pillowy Cinnamon Rolls last weekend - they were delicious, and even better, shared with people I love. I also made little mini hand pies that were based on a blueberry poptart recipe I found, but I used huckleberries, and “Mini Huckleberry Poptart Hand Pie Things” was too long of a name, so my husband lovingly named them: Huckleberry Delights.
Look at those things. I can’t even begin to describe them. I made the crust by hand - flaky, buttery, perfectly savory. Huckleberries with some lemon juice and sugar that had been cooked ever so slightly to create a huckleberry jammy texture. Some icing on top. Boy howdy, they were good. I wasn’t in my own kitchen, so I was missing some tools that I wished were at my disposal. To be honest, I was so worried that I wasn’t able to achieve my own vision of “perfection” with these tiny pies! Which is crazy! Everyone said they were delicious. “Velvet in the mouth” was a phrase used to describe them, and I’d be lying if I didn’t consider getting that tattooed on my arm.
I haven’t got much to say this week, but just wanted to use the metaphor of perfectly-imperfect pies to remind you that your standards of perfection are probably higher than other people are holding you to and sometimes you’ve gotta run with the imperfect. It might just be velvet in the mouth.
For evidence, behold my cinnamon rolls! Best served warm, in my opinion.
Monday, August 25th - I’m going to be making these copycat Starbucks Cranberry Bliss Bars. The recipe comes from a woman named Liz Moody who creates recipes that are normally good for stabilizing your blood sugar and won’t make you feel like junk. These bars (GF for you, Jules!) are perfect alongside coffee or just anytime.
See you all next time - maybe I’ll have more thoughts, maybe I won’t! But I am loving this personal challenge to bake something different every two weeks. I hope you’re all enjoying some extra sweetness, too.
Huckleberries are such a treat in their narrow growth window. Those delights looked fantastic!
Huckleberry delights!!!
"Your standards of perfection are probably higher than other people are holding you to and sometimes you’ve gotta run with the imperfect. It might just be velvet in the mouth." Gah, this is incredible!
